2009 marks the 6th year that students from Thames River Academy and
Teachers' Memorial collaborated with Meiklem Kiln Works to create 150 soup
bowls to be sold at an annual event to raise money for the Norwich Soup Kitchen.

The Empty Bowls project begins for the students at Meiklem Kiln Works in
January of each year. Lyndsay and her students throw 150 bowls, trim and
bisque fire them. The high school and middle school youth then visit the studio
and learn the process of glazing, and decorate the 150 bowls!

Thanks for helping us raise $2,300 for the Norwich Soup
Kitchen & Food Pantry
Teachers' Memorial Middle
School students served the soup
at the 2008 Empty bowls Event.
Students learn various methods of glazing and then dip,
paint and drip the glaze onto the bowls.
Right: Glazed bowls are
dull and chalky in color.
They will gain their
vibrant shine from the
radiant heat in the kiln
which fires up to nearly
2200 degrees!
Thanks to Thames River Academy students for glazing 70 of the 150 bowls!
